Curious Public Launches James Bullbrook Memorial Scholarship

Award would help send a young person to Woodward Skateboard Camp

Toronto, Ontario, January 26, 2023 – Curious Public announced today that applications are open for its first annual James Bullbrook Memorial Scholarship; a $500 US award to be used towards a session at Camp Woodward PA, in honour of our late friend and colleague, James Bullbrook. 

Skateboarding, and Woodward in particular, were an important part of James’s relationship with his son, Richie. They would travel down to Woodward to help develop Richie’s talent and passion for skating. Along the way, Richie would learn about James’s passion for architecture and conversation. 

“Our trips to Woodward summer camps are some of my favourite memories; I got to skate, and I learned a lot from my dad,” said Richie Bullbrook. “It’s very meaningful to me to learn so much about him, now that he’s gone. I’m grateful for the love and support of his friends and colleagues for every story and memory they share. I add them to my own.” 

With support from Canada Skateboard and Woodward PA, Curious Public is spreading the word that applications are now open. Families interested in the James Bullbrook Memorial Scholarship should apply by April 30, 2023. Skaters need to be residents of Canada, and aged 7–17 as of January 1, 2023. The scholarship fund must be used in the same year it is awarded. 

“Richie Bullbrook and his dad have been familiar faces at many of our events over the years and we were deeply saddened when we learned James had passed away,” said Hagan McCreath, Executive Director of Canada Skateboard. “Canada Skateboard’s mission is to support, promote and grow skateboarding in Canada. Being asked to help a young Canadian skater connect with their family, community, and an opportunity to grow their skills through this memorial scholarship is an honour.” 

“The best times in James’ life were spent with his son, doing what they loved together,” said Lloyd Rang, President, Curious Public. “We hope this small gift will bring kids and their parents closer.”
