Our dads were comms pros—with a tool for everyth Our dads were comms pros—with a tool for everything and a saying for every situation. 🛠️

Here are some of the handy lessons our team picked up from our dads about strategy, messaging, and knowing when to just use duct tape and move on.

(You know he was right.)👇

“Don’t gild the lily”

🎯Don’t dilute your message with unnecessary flourish. Simple, clear comms is best to get your message across.

“That’s a tool, not a toy.”

🎯Social media isn’t just for play. It’s a strategic platform for storytelling, influence, and connection. Use it with intention.

“Always keep your eyes two car lengths ahead.”

🎯The immediate future isn’t necessarily a mystery with a plan to spot trends and issues early.

“All that glitters is not gold.”

🎯The best comms don’t just shine, they have depth; they’re clear and honest. Focus on substance rather than sounding impressive.

“There are two ways to do things. The easy way and the right way.”

🎯Quick fixes fade. Real impact sticks because it takes clarity, consistency, and care. Build it right, even if it takes longer.

“If you borrow something, return it in better condition than when you got it.”

🎯If someone does you a solid, make it a positive experience for them. They’re more likely to help you again and perhaps tell their friends!

“Hire a professional, get professional results”

🎯When you do major projects yourself, people can often tell. Sometimes, in comms as in construction, you need to bring in a pro.

“Always have a backup plan. Bad things happen to everyone.”

🎯An effective crisis plan isn’t pessimistic, it’s smart. Reputation is built in calm but tested in chaos. Plan for bad days so you can show up strong when it counts.

“You made a commitment. You’re going”

🎯Do what you say you’ll do. Show up and stand by your position/decision/message, even when it’s not convenient.

“Don’t bullshit me.”

🎯Be candid, honest and upfront when dealing with challenging situations.

What phrases did you hear from your dad on repeat growing up?
