Meet our next expert panelist, Alan Findlay! Ala Meet our next expert panelist, Alan Findlay!

Alan knows that earning public trust for a major project depends on a team’s ability to communicate its value–especially as time (and delays) march on.
Storytelling is at the heart of Alan’s work as an Executive Consultant and Strategist for us here at @curiouspblc, as well as in his own practice, @findlay_et_al.

Al has honed his storytelling skills, particularly in large-scale projects, over his more than 25 years of experience in journalism, government and the public sector. He’s led the communications teams for two major government agencies–Infrastructure Ontario and the Ontario Energy Board. So, if there’s a communications expert who knows what it takes to keep large-scale project narratives and communications on track and resonating with diverse stakeholder groups, it’s Al!

Al has the rare ability to bridge critical paths, political priorities, regulatory demands and public expectations. That’s why we’re thrilled to get his sharp insights into Canada’s nation-building projects and what communications pros can take from them during our next #CommsInQuestion panel discussion!

We know! You’re thinking, “but you said Friday We know! You’re thinking, “but you said Friday dump day!?”
There are no absolutes. Sometimes, Friday is the best day for good news.

Friday is typically a slow news day and reporters are still hunting for stories. Releasing or promoting your report on a Friday can be a godsend for them. Stories with a good human-angle are perfect. A story that gives a reporter a new angle by talking to people out in the world is tailor made for second day coverage.

Just like your bad news blow-up rolling across the news channels tickers all weekend, so too can your good story.

How and when you communicate your message matters–a lot.

Think of traditional reporters as the OG influencers. Include them in your rollout or prep for a hairy issue to go public.

One of the first things we hear before media train One of the first things we hear before media training even starts is:
“You’re going to teach me how to NOT answer the question, right?”

Wrong.

Dodging questions doesn’t protect you. It erodes trust and leaves space for your critics to fill the gaps and control the narrative.

Good media training helps you share your key messages with your reporter’s audience. Learn to reframe tricky questions, ask for context, or explain why you can’t answer.
